Wireless Charging : How it works ?
Written by : Ayush Bharal
I'm sure that you have heard about or even used the wireless charging feature on your phone. But what actually is it and how exactly does it work? Let's find out :
Definition :
It is a form of transferring electric power from one point to another without the use of a physical wire.
We have to just plug and switch on the wireless charging pad and then put our phone on it. The phone will automatically start charging.
Working :
The main principle behind this technology is magnetic induction with which electricity is transferred from from one device to other.
There are two coils involved in the system. One coil is in the charging pad (say coil 1) which receives power from outlet and the other is present in the back portion of the phone itself (say coil 2).
The coil in the charging pad gets electricity. Due to the flowing current, a magnetic field is generated perpendicular to the coil.
When the phone is placed on the pad then its coil 2 comesin the magnetic field of the coil 1. As the current received by coil 1 is alternative current, Lenz's law comes into play.
Due to it, the reverse process occurs in the coil 2 as it is in the magnetic field of coil 1, induced current starts to generate in the phone's coil. This current charges the battery of the phone.
This type of charging works only if the phone has a glass or polycarbonate back as metal back do not allow the flow of power wirelessly.

Compatibility
Today most of the flagship phones that come with glass back have this feature built in. This include all latest phones from Apple and the highest priced phones of other brands.
There are two standards that offer wireless charging to other companies. Almost 75% of the devices use Qi wireless standard and the remaining use Airfuel standard.
Usually, you can find a lot of wireless charging pads online. They come at a very low price as well as there are some which cost a lot. You can find some good deals here:
